Award winning play about modern slavery tells Mende Nazer’s remarkable story of survival
The impactful play following the true story of Mende Nazer returns to the capital. As a child in Sudan Mende was sold into slavery and subjected to physical and mental abuse for years working in Khartoum and then London.
In September 2000 she made a dramatic break for freedom and in the years since has written a harrowing book detailing her experience.
The stage adaptation of her story has won many awards and the lady behind the production is Director Dr Caroline Clegg who came into the London Live studios to speak to Tanya.
Dr Caroline first met Mende in 2006, creating the first production about her life story in 2010. 14 years later they continue to tell her story in the hope of helping others and trying to improve the situation worldwide.
There are 130,000 people in the UK and nearly 50 million worldwide that are affected by human trafficking.
The play is on at the Riverside Studios and is called ‘Slave: A Question of Freedom’.
