Award-winning short film ‘Travel Socks’ tackles abortion taboo

A short film exploring the tricky and often taboo topic of abortion is to be screened in the capital this weekend.

‘Travel Socks’ follows the story of Orla, a woman from Northern Ireland, who has to travel across the Irish Sea to access a safe abortion – all set in the first lockdown of March 2020.

The film, made with a majority female crew, has been making waves and winning awards already, and features a whole host of young and up-and-coming talent both on and off screen.

Helena Wadia spoke to the writer and director, Tess Annan, and the producer Charlotte Brownlee, about making the film, and their aim to break down the stigma of abortion.

‘Travel Socks’ will be screened at the Rio Cinema in Dalston on Sunday 15th December.
